Susan was originally inspired in 1999 by the sculptures of the famous and wonderful Laura Wambsgans, also an SCAA member. With Laura's encouragement Susan began carving stone; she found she liked the challenge and satisfaction of creating the abstract forms. Her profession in welding (aerospace work) for 20 years could also be utilized to create metal sculptures. But the stones are her first love.
Then (also at Laura’s urging) Susan joined the SCAA to learn more about art. She is glad she did, because she found friends and learning go hand in hand. The learning continues for this novice artist thanks to the friends!
Susan has attended two stone carving symposiums in Cambria, CA in recent years. And has won 2 awards at the SCAA's Annual Art Classic Gala: gold (2005) and silver (2007) for her sculptures.
She wishes she had "discovered art" twenty years sooner. Susan hopes to continue carving for the next twenty years at least, perhaps she will be the "Grandma Moses" of sculpture. Ha Ha
