Watercolor- Gold
Gary Friedman
"Cornwall Harbour"
17x14
NFS
661-255-2209
*As a medium, watercolor must be one of the most difficult for me to understand how it can be done. It's just an accumulation of seemingly random strokes of varying tones. Not one stroke can be misplaced or the piece falls apart. This watercolor looks random and then the scene appears in the mind's eye and then recedes and reforms continuously. It is subtle and dynamic at the same time.

* This lively use of washes, brush work and color felt that it captured the spirit of place. It is very confident and fluid and really caught the light well in a fresh manner making this a charming painting.

"Mournful Memories Amid Windswept Whispers"

*The artist who painted the romantic study of a young girl created a work with layers of interest; spinning a story that left us lingering. The painting is infused with emotion. Technically it was intriguing – with unique textures and color.

*The rocks are monumental. The size and scale and cropping and balance lead to the suggestion that each one is its own mountain but all in a jumbled pile. Not the kind of mountains one could hike through. There is no ground and no sky so the experience is of looking at a cropped slice of nature that could be a reflection of inner barriers to break through.
*An amazing study of rock. An unusual subject captured magnificently on a grand scale.

*The painting of the geese is well executed and makes this a lovely painting. I felt like the artist had lot of interest in this watercolor without overworking it.

"A Fish Called John Dory"

$1,500

*I like bas relief and collect examples of folk art bas relief. This has elements of folk art and alludes to the seafaring tradition of creating art on long voyages about things of the sea. Like scrimshaw whales. I visualize the bottom of the ocean as the piece on the floor and the fish swimming through the water above. The piece looks like it moves into different positions. It brings the ancient art of sculpture together with the craft of woodworking into the realm of fine art with layers of concepts.
* The fish/nautical wood carving was a fantastic piece; each element masterfully designed in its own right – then assembled as a whole –and it held the design throughout. The attention to detail on this piece is flawless.

Hector Fernandez
" Reflections of Purity"
22x20
$2,500

*The black and white saint looks more than just monochrome. It seems to be a two dimensional image of a human body made out of mercury or polished mirror or liquid silver. Since nothing made of those materials could be living and breathing it is the representation of the human spirit that this art is about.
*Technically perfect piece of scratchboard art – hard to believe the alchemy of ink and a scratch tool can create something so reflective – like liquid metal.

"From Start to Art"

*A story board that contains art and is art. The piece is about process and uses the process of art and words to create the entire. It has the elements of the passage of time and the freezing of time. It's interactive which makes it partly a performance piece involving the artist and the viewer. It is dynamic and active and brings up many issues about life and art.
*This piece is a testament to the subject and a fascinating portrait of this man. There is a grand story here and you can feel the admiration, dedication and interest of the artist.

* Small and powerful. The out of focus hole in the fence really draws the eye into the picture and then the in focus center pops out at the viewer. A circle in a square. The wrinkled pants and dusty boots are classic. Barn wood frame makes a good presentation of subject.
*Good use of depth of field to create focus on the subject. The presentation was well done and gave it an additional wow factor.

Best Of Show
Laura Wambsgans
" Canyon Trail, Elsmere Canyon"
32x27
$1,600
661-259-0696
*The Best of Show was awarded to the one painting that simply took our breaths away. It is a stunning landscape that excelled in all criteria. The color was impeccable, beautifully muted tones with lots of atmospheric perspective that led us round every bend, over the hills to the mountains beyond. The brush work was evident and it energized the painting. It felt as if the artist loved his/her subject and it showed.*
*Landscape breathes of the local back country's light, shapes and textures. There was a slight haze in the air as the light rose or sank in that canyon. Composition, foreground, mid-ground and background, shapes, colors, tones, textures all blended into one true experience of the power of nature. Not a Wagnerian nature of huge mountains and fluffy white clouds but the nature we visit to renew our spirits and come back from with our perceptions elevated.

*This portrait is more "realistic" than a photo because it reveals more than the surface. The accumulated brushstrokes and lights and darks and tones are there to tell us about the character of the person. When an individual is so well portrayed the humanity of us all is revealed.
*A superb portrait showed that confident fresh brush work, which surely must have been done from life. These qualities display a master’s hand.
